課程概述

This is a course in population biology with an emphasis on population
ecology. Since several students taking this course had minimal ecology
background, the material covered in this course will start from basic, then
move gradually into more advanced topics. I will try to incorporate lectures
with various other activities, including outdoor experiments and classroom
assignments/discussions to achieve the following goals for this course. Much
of what you will learn is your own work, including weekly reading and
assignments.
Remember, I welcome your suggestions anytime. Don’t be shy to talk to me.

課程目標
1.Students understand science as a process of inquiry. This means they are
able to ask scientific questions, gather data and observations, process their
results, and synthesize coherent, justifiable trends or conclusions that can
be applied to other systems.
2.Students are able to locate scientific information and analyze its
usefulness and validity.
3.Students are able to use mathematical principles and computer technology to
solve scientific problems.
4.Students have a broad knowledge of the biological systems, and the
principles which govern them.
5.Students recognize that science is based upon a small number of important
principles which allow scientists to understand a diverse range of natural
phenomena.
課程要求
Course Requirement:
1.Attendance: You need to attend lectures to earn points from quizzes. Only
absences with supporting official documents are excused. For example, if you
need to do field work in a given week, please provide a note detailing the
reason and have it signed by your advisor. There is a 10 point deduction for
each unexcused absence.
2.Group collaboration: You will be divided into random groups. Each will be
led by a graduate student. You will sit together during the class and
generate products for exercises together.
3.Quizzes: There will be 15 weekly quizzes. Quizzes will be based on
material covered in lectures and reading assignment. They will include mainly
short answer questions. Sometimes, an in-class assignment will replace part
of a quiz. There is no final exam per se. The last quiz will be given during
the final exam week.
4.Homework: There will be 15 weekly homework assignments. Homework are
usually short reports of laboratory exercises. Frequently, you will turn in
homework as groups. In that case, all group members will share the same score
for the homework. No make-up quizzes will be allowed; no late homework will
be accepted. Quiz & homework total 20 points per week.
5.Group Investigation: Students will work in groups to complete a group
project. You need to apply the scientific methods to answer a question of
interest to you, report the process in a written report, and give an oral
presentation to your class. No late reports will be accepted. At the end of
semester, you will turn in, as a group, a portfolio that contains everything
you have done related to the group project. All group members will share the
same score for the written and oral report.
6.Peer-grading: You will grade yourself and your group member at the end of
semester.
7.Extra-credit activities: You can replace up to 2 lowest weekly points with
points earned from extra-credit activities (20 points each). You need to
participate in the activi

Evalution policy
100%
Your grades will be based on the following components: 15 Quizzes and Homework 280 points (20 points per week) 1 Written Report 100 points 1 Oral Report 50 points 1 Peer Grading 20 points (also grade yourself) TOTAL 450 points Grading Standards: The total points you collect will be prorated to a 100 points scale. Undergraduate students need to receive 60 points (or higher), and graduate students 70 points (or higher) to pass the course. We will use a normal distribution scale to evaluate the whole class.
